NOTICE!

ADDICTIONACTION.ORG

Dear Norene,

Insurance discrimination routinely faces people seeking treatment and recovery. This critical problem -- featured prominently in HBO's ADDICTION documentary -- is being addressed in state legislatures across the country and in the US Congress.

For instance, today (July 10) the House Education and Labor committee is holding hearings on H.R. 1424, the Paul Wellstone Mental Health and Addiction Equity Act of 2007. The bill would require mental health and addiction treatment services to be covered at the same level as other illnesses in insurance plans.

You can use HBO's ADDICTION to focus the attention of community leaders, elected officials and citizens on insurance discrimination and what it means to people in your community who are seeking help to recover:

bulletWatch "Insurance Woes" for free on HBO.com, then include the web link in messages to elected officials and others when you contact them about this issue.

bulletRead and share the story of Marianne and Curt Coates (PDF), parents whose son was denied insurance coverage, and who attended the hearing in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania that was filmed by HBO.

bulletMake sure elected officials hear personal stories from constituents about how insurance discrimination has prevented them or their loved ones from getting the help they need.

bulletUse our downloadable tools to plan and host a local event to show and discuss the Insurance Woes segment from the HBO documentary. Make the event a springboard for action in your community to educate and inform policymakers about this needless, costly barrier to recovery.

Many individuals and families who have watched ADDICTION online, at house parties, or town hall meetings are doing all this, and more. Their testimony is included in Ending Insurance Discrimination: Fairness and Equality for Americans with Mental Health and Addictive Disorders, a compelling report based on field hearings in 14 cities conducted this year by the Congressional Addiction, Treatment and Recovery Caucus, co-chaired by Representatives Patrick Kennedy (D-RI) and Jim Ramstad (R-MN).

We appreciate your commitment to talk with your family, friends and neighbors!

Sincerely,
