Dear Norene,
Insurance discrimination routinely faces people
seeking treatment and recovery. This critical problem -- featured
prominently in HBO's ADDICTION documentary -- is being addressed in state
legislatures across the country and in the US Congress.
For instance, today (July 10) the House Education
and Labor committee is holding hearings on H.R. 1424, the Paul
Wellstone Mental Health and Addiction Equity Act of 2007. The bill would
require mental health and addiction treatment services to be covered at
the same level as other illnesses in insurance plans.
You can use HBO's ADDICTION to focus the
attention of community leaders, elected officials and citizens on
insurance discrimination and what it means to people in your
community who are seeking help to recover:
Many individuals and families who have watched ADDICTION
online, at house parties, or town hall meetings are doing all this, and
more. Their testimony is included in Ending
Insurance Discrimination: Fairness and Equality for Americans with Mental
Health and Addictive Disorders, a compelling report based on field
hearings in 14 cities conducted this year by the Congressional Addiction,
Treatment and Recovery Caucus, co-chaired by Representatives Patrick
Kennedy (D-RI) and Jim Ramstad (R-MN).
We appreciate your commitment to talk with
your family, friends and neighbors!
Sincerely,
